Engineer III, Design Mechanical

This position provides mid-level engineering assistance to the senior engineer for the design, development, and execution of natural gas facilities; including but not limited to:  measurement, regulation, compression, storage, pipeline and other related gas transmission and gas storage equipment and facilities while operating independently under general supervision.  Performs engineering tasks and projects of moderate complexity, relying on established guidelines, general direction, and increasing experience.  Routine technical assignments completed independently.  Plans and conducts work requiring independent evaluation.  Recognizes economic aspects of job.  Demonstrates professional conduct and business ethics.  Applies specialized knowledge in the effective completion of major projects and/or work assignments.  Ability to present the results of research and analysis.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Design

• Provide mechanical engineering design support, develop project scopes and estimates, provide project site layouts, and justification of projects under the general review of the Manager
• Specify mechanical equipment and materials for various gas transmission and gas storage projects
• Design, including engineering calculations, or design coordination on more complex projects under general review of the Manager
• Initiate and complete service contracts under general review of the Manager
• Perform generally supervised work on development and implementation of Company design standards and specifications
• Research and analyze technical data, industry specifications and standards, and vendor manuals to determine feasibility of design and/or application and to maintain knowledge and understanding of applicable technologies
• Acquire knowledge of internal workings of processes, practices, and policies to make future recommendations

Project Support

• Assist in the development of construction related contracts
• Support and monitor on-site project inspection and facility commissioning
• Provide assistance to project management staff in the areas of project budgeting and expense forecasting. This duty is performed under general supervision by a more senior engineer
• Monitor project progress reports and other project related work and provide support to project management staff as needed
• Monitor facility design and construction for compliance with all business objectives, applicable regulations, and Company policies and procedures

Communication and Collaboration

• Work with internal business partners and project team members to develop measurement, compressor, pipeline and storage facilities in accordance with business needs
• Work with third-party engineering consulting firms on more complex projects to ensure facilities meet all applicable standards, specifications, policies, and requirements of internal and external business partners. Work is generally supervised by the Manager
• Work with external customers to develop Company measurement, compressor, pipeline and storage facilities required for the Company to serve the commercial needs. Work is reviewed periodically but some latitude exists for unreviewed action
• Provide mechanical engineering technical support, troubleshooting, and problem solving for operating issues relating to horsepower and gas compressors, regulating and measurement equipment, electronic automation, pipeline and other gas transmission and storage facilities and equipment
• Participate in Company and industry studies and projects to enhance the overall safety, reliability, and efficiency of the gas transmission and storage systems
• Serve as Company liaison at community events, help with volunteer efforts
• Begin to provide guidance to less experienced engineers
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering (or a relevant engineering discipline) from an ABET – Accredited Engineering Program
• 6 – 8 years’ experience in Design Engineering or a related field
• Valid driver’s license and insurability
• Ability to work overtime with or without notice
• Ability to work in both an open office environment as well as outside in varied weather conditions
• Experience successfully applying basic business concepts
• Ability to read, understand, and apply directions, policies, procedures, guidelines, requirements, and regulations
• Ability to provide direction to others and work successfully with individuals throughout organization
• Highly analytical, detail-oriented
• Exhibited strong verbal and written communication skills
• Advanced skill level in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook or similar
• Experience in position requiring analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
• Demonstrated success in a position requiring analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
• Experience successfully working both independently and in a team environment
• Demonstrated success producing results working under tight deadlines

Preferred

• Demonstrated success in a construction environment
• Demonstrated success in a project lead role or equivalent
• Fundamentals of Engineering certificate
• Experience with material components of natural gas pipeline systems
• Demonstrated success using financial reporting or project execution software
• Previous success in a mentoring/coaching role
