Southern Star is currently seeking highly motivated and energetic students or recent graduates to join our team as summer interns. The GIS Analyst Intern will gain practical experience working with enterprise GIS databases, spatial analysis tools, mapping applications, and field asset information. Interns will work alongside GIS professionals and subject matter experts to support projects that improve data quality, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Interns will receive mentoring, detailed orientation and training, and opportunities to collaborate with multiple departments including Operations, Engineering, Integrity Management, Compliance, and Information Technology. This position offers exposure to real-world GIS applications within the natural gas pipeline industry and provides valuable professional experience in geospatial technologies. Interns will typically support the GIS team in the performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual business case processes, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of the department. They may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the Southern Star community and with fellow interns.

 

Highlights/Internship Overview: This is a 12-week, competitively paid summer internship starting in May and ending in August. Interns work 40 hours per week with paid company holidays. A taxable housing stipend may be provided to obtain housing near the Southern Star work location if the successful candidate’s permanent home address and current college address is determined by Southern Star to be greater than reasonable driving distance from the assigned work location.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development, maintenance, and quality assurance of enterprise GIS data.
  • Create, edit, and maintain spatial datasets representing pipeline, facility, and land-related assets.
  • Produce maps, exhibits, dashboards, and reports for operational and business needs.
  • Perform spatial analysis to support engineering, integrity management, environmental, and operational projects.
  • Assist with data and records validation, research, and reconciliation efforts between GIS and other enterprise systems.
  • Support GIS data entry, conversion, and migration projects.
  • Assist in documenting GIS workflows, procedures, and standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and support GIS-based solutions.
  • Support special projects related to regulatory compliance, asset management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in mentoring sessions and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • You must be 18 years of age by the start of the summer internship assignment and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 after each completed semester/term.
  • You must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Junior and Senior candidates are on track to graduate with a bachelor’s/master’s degree.
  • Major in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Geomatics, Surveying, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn GIS software and geospatial technologies.
  • Ability to contribute to and balance delivery timelines against, multiple projects/demands simultaneously.
